4(1-inch-thick) slices Southern white or challah bread

Whisk the eggs together in a medium mixing bowl. Add the cream, milk, maple syrup, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk everything together and set aside.
Preheat a griddle or large nonstick sauté pan over medium-low heat and brush with butter. Gently dip each slice of bread into the egg batter, coating both sides, and place on a wire rack to allow excess batter to drip off.
Add battered bread to the griddle and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown. If bread starts to turn too dark and is still raw in the center, you can finish cooking it in a 350 degree oven, or use a steak weight to weigh down the bread, cooking it faster. Top with a sprinkle of confectioners’ sugar and any Sweet Topping.
