It all began in Grandmother's Kitchen...
How did a small town Georgia girl become a national player in the mail order
food business? It all started when founder Vera Stewart used to ride the
Nancy Hanks train from Macon to Atlanta each summer to visit her grandmother,
Vera Wingfield. There, she learned to bake the special cakes her grandmother
had spent a lifetime perfecting. Years later, in an effort to attract steady cash
flow to her thriving but seasonal catering business, those recipes came in quite
handy. As a tribute to her grandmother, Vera decided to share the homemade
goodies she grew up enjoying and learning to bake herself. Very Vera was a
natural extension of her catering business which had already developed its own
extensive mailing list from local and out of state Masters Golf Tournament customers.
Very Vera is reminiscent of an era when homemakers took pride in their homemade
confections and shared them with new neighbors or sent them as an expression of
sympathy. "Everyone is so busy today, and I don't want to lose some of the traditions
we all grew up with. Giving homemade food gifts is a wonderful way to brighten up
someone's day." Vera chose her grandmother's old-fashioned, whipping cream
pound cake as the recipe with which to begin. As an added touch, she named a
cake after each one of her siblings, who now keep up a rivalry based on each others
sales volume. Next the challenge was to figure out a way to ship the cakes and
have customers receive them just like they came from the oven. After several trial
and error shipments, the current secure method for delivering cakes around the
country was perfected.
The Very Vera name received national recognition in 1995 when an editorial piece
written in the November issue of Southern Living Magazine featured our mail order
division. Since that time, many other feature articles have been written in The New
York Times, Gourmet, In Style and American Home Styles & Gardening. From this sort
of national exposure, VeryVera has reached households from coast to coast.
The VeryVera philosophy is based on a winning attitude and passion for perfection.
