Gadgets & Gizmos

Cooking for one can be a challenge but with a few of the right tools, you can cut down on waste while creating a fun mealtime experience.

I rarely make coffee at home because I can never make just one cup. I end up pouring out perfectly good java or filling every ice tray in my freezer with coffee cubes. If I had the French Press for One, I could stretch my favorite bag of beans much further. And with ten fun colors to choose from, there's one for every personality.

When preparing a dish for one, it seems like such a waste to dirty three or four pots and pans while cooking. Just place eggs, vegetables, shellfish, potatoes and even thicker pasta (like ziti or bowties) in this futuristic silicone Cooking Pod and submerge them in boiling water. The vessel works as a steamer and strainer in one. By cooking all of your ingredients in one pot, you'll cut down on dirty dishes and save water too.

I recently made a pasta dish with homemade pesto prepared in a blender. I cut the recipe in half and found it difficult to blend the reduced ingredients smoothly. This handy Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker would have done the trick nicely. Simply place whole peeled garlic cloves, peppercorns, fresh herbs and a little olive oil and with a few shakes, you'll have perfectly pulverized pesto. Say that five times fast.

I love a glass of orange juice in the morning but I can never seem to drink an entire carton before it sours. I could prepare a glass of fresh-squeezed juice if I had this pretty little conversation piece. The bird juicer makes short work of lemons, limes and oranges for an unbeatable glass of lemonade, limeade or orange juice. It doesn't hurt that it's simply adorable, either.

Invited to a BYOB party? Instead of lugging around a six pack or bottle of wine you won't finish or toting around a plastic pitcher, picnic in style by mixing up your favorite cocktail in the Slom Glass Bottle. For non-adult beverages, fill the Vapur Collapsible Bottle, a beverage pouch that rolls up when empty, with refreshing lemonade.
